Looking at the questions listed here, I'm reminded just how much the English language is falling apart. I mean, there's a SPELL CHECKER provided here, and people STILL are spelling things wrong!

What is causing the demise of proper grammar and word usage? Is it the overly-casual typing patterns that we all use now? Is it the proliferation of ebonics into daily culture? Is it irreversible? Is it just a trend?

Oh, my goodness, finally someone who cares about grammar! It really gets on my nerves nowadays how people don't put enough care into any piece of writing, informal or formal. I don't really know what it is, but it could have something to do with less strict grammar rules in the classroom that's leading to people not enforcing the rules themselves. I don't mind being a "nerd". At least I don't look idiotic. And pretty much the only reason why I care is because chatspeak and whatnot is very difficult to read and comprehend.

People just don't care anymore. Even if the spell checker is available, they won't use it. Proper spelling and grammar are considered nerdy now. Plus, abbreviations from the internet and text messaging don't help. People get into a mode where that is the "normal" way of typing, so anything other than "c u l8r" looks wrong.

I absolutely agree with you. The spelling is atrocious, which is inexcusable given that the spell checker is sitting right there, ready to be used with the click of a key. I'm also appalled at the grammar (or lack thereof). People don't seem to understand tenses anymore, and sometimes it's really difficult to figure out what the question is!
Ah, well. Thee and me can at least use the spell checker.
Have a good day!

Proliferation of ebonics into daily language, in my opinion, has had a very strong influence over written language on the internet. You get dyslexics like me though that struggle with silly things, "l" and "e" at the end of words drive me bananas, things of that nature. As long as you're clearly trying, I don't have a problem with how a person types, but if you're being clearly lazy, it's annoying.

You are absolutely right! I believe our schools are to blame, and the parents right along with them. The quality of public education is so poor unless parents keep an eye on things at all times. I don't think it's Ebonics that is to blame, because it is a recognized dialect, as is General American. If we spent the money on education, rather than war, we might have a chance of keeping up with the rest of the industialized world. At this rate, we are sitting ducks for martial law and theocracy. Scary, huh?

I strongly agree. I'm forever correcting people. Mostly my boyfriend....but I'll forgive him since he's originally from Bosnia. Nobody seems to be reading books these days either which is part of the reason we have this problem.
I didn't learn to read until I was 10 and my English has come on leaps and bounds since then.

A lot of your observations are legitimate.
Bear in mind, some posts are from foreign countries. Those errors must be forgiven and credit bestowed on those who try to commicate their thoughts and opinions in English. Kudos to them. Can you write or speak any other language?
This media is world wide, ya know.

I've noticed this, too. For one thing, it's a sheer lackadaisical disposition. I wouldn't worry about it, though. Us educated people have an advantage. It really does bother some people, but it doesn't normally bother me. I don't know why that is.
