well most of the time we think it's slightly funny but saying "lol" is faster than saying slightly giggle or almost chuckle

Dude, you can't use an LOL if you aren't really laughing out loud.
lol should be used for mildly funny things, and it's even acceptable when you don't actually utter a loud laugh outward. But LOL should strictly be used for serious laughing!!

i just say it cuz when people i am talking to say something stupid or funny, i say "lol". But half the time im not laughing out loud lol

Because it's a quick and easy way to express how you're feeling (somewhat). Some genius came up with the idea of "LOL," and it stuck.

for me, lol is something i say when i can't think of anything else good to say. if i said ha ha, or something else like that, it would sound weird.
my friend, actually told me once that 'lol' meant something totally different to her than 'laugh out loud'. people just say 'lol' when they can't think of what to say, i think.

Because maybe if you say "haha", the person would think youre being sarcastic. And "lol" is shorter than "haha" and lots of us are lazy and want to type less. =)

because we have nothing better to say, and even though we arnt talking to the person, we have to fill the awkward silence online with a LOL! lol! see!?
