This is an outdated festival, celebrating a time of sectarian strife in England. Should we continue to celebrate it? Especially given that it seems to be a license to create mayhem, for those that require an excuse - see this BBC article:

I would be interested to know what others think of this.

I have already seen questions from people worried that they cannot buy loads this christmas. I'm in the same boat and have come up with a few ideas; I often spend money on doing something fun e.g. a day out somewhere with friends rather than spending money on a gift, promising time for someone to help them with seomthing they want done, baking and making e.g decorating a cheap frame for a special photo for someone. I wondered what other creative and original ideas people could share with us for those who work hard and love their friends and family, but don't have enough money to go around!

I have no children but can appreciate the massive expense Christmas puts on families, especially ones on a lower income.
This year why not buy one gift for Christmas morning then tell the children that on Boxing day, you are all having a family day out so they can chose their presents themselves as they have been so good! (because the day after Christmas the £500 you have spent on Christmas eve, will actually now cost you about £200)!!!
Would that work?

I'd personally settle for a pepperoni pizza. Turkeys always taste bland and stringy to me personally............

I moved to Indiana last year when I got married. For every major holiday we go to visit my parents in Wisconsin and/or my in-laws, who live in Tennessee. This year, Christmas is being held at my sister's house. We don't get along for millions of reasons. Literally. Every year she picks a fight with me about whatever shallow, judgmental thing happens to pop into her head, and I end up leaving mad (to avoid losing my temper). This year, my husband and I are tossing around the idea of doing Christmas at home, and going by my parents for New Year's Eve and Day, instead. This is going to upset my mother, who expects to see my kids on Christmas, and who buys them TONS of presents to make up for seeing them only once a month. Am I obligated to make an appearance for mom's sake? How can I break the news to her, that we're not coming? I don't want to spend nine hours driving with 4 kids and a dog in the car, just to listen to my sis's usual B.S. Help!

I'm 8 months pregnant and can't travel to visit my family on Thanksgiving. It's just my daughter and I alone for the first time this Thanksgiving. I would love to cook all of the traditional stuff, but the reality is that I really don't want to slave in the kitchen all day over a hot stove to cook for two. The reality is that we probably wouldn't eat all of those leftovers either. We don't really know anyone where we live because we just moved here so going to a friend's house is out of the question. What is a good way to still have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner without cooking it, going to a buffet (eew), or spending a lot at a restaurant?

I have some family members that are away at college, and they wont be able to make it home for Thanksgiving *sigh*. Well, to cheer them up, I wanted to make some type of homemade snacks and ship it to them. Obviously, they can't be anything that needs refridgeration...but do you have any ideas as to what I can send them? Any ideas would be great, just as long as its something that would remind them of Thanksgiving! Thanks!

I recently met this lady. I'm 31, she's 25. We had been talking online and met up at a little bar then went and got something to eat. We talked for several hours. The next night we went out again and it seems as if we both had a really good time, I know I did and I'm very interested in her. We are supposed to go out again this coming weekend. My question here is....If we go out a few more times and everything keeps going really good (maybe it develops into something) should I invite her to Thanksgiving dinner. I know for sure my family would totally approve of it. She's not from the area where we live therefore she has no family around. She doesn't plan on going home due to her work schedule Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away so I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to invite her since her and I just met. If I do invite her at what point should I do that, should I do it a couple weeks in advance or wait 'till just a few days prior to the holliday?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Someone bought my husband a Santa suit to play Santa. He makes a good one. But we have no idea how much to charge. Do you think we should charge by the hour, 1/2 hour, ask for a donation or what? We are doing this so we can have a Christmas also; otherwise we won't. Any suggestions?
