Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, which marked the suspension of hostilities on November 11, 1918, effectively ending World War I.

With the passage of time, the holiday was officially expanded to recognize the contributions of veterans in all the wars fought by the United States.

This was similar to what happened to Decoration Day, which originally honored America's decorated war heroes and over time was renamed Memorial Day, honoring all of America's war dead and eventually included all of our family members who had preceded us in death.
