I have no children but can appreciate the massive expense Christmas puts on families, especially ones on a lower income.
This year why not buy one gift for Christmas morning then tell the children that on Boxing day, you are all having a family day out so they can chose their presents themselves as they have been so good! (because the day after Christmas the £500 you have spent on Christmas eve, will actually now cost you about £200)!!!
Would that work?

Absolutely, you can celebrate Christmas with all the tradition and food. maybe just have 1 small gift each to open on the Day with the understanding that you all go shopping the next day. Sounds good. We do what we have to to save money.

Save your money until the January sales and buy then. If you have children buy one small gift and a 'promise' to visit the sales. Kids are often overwhelmed at Christmas. Save money by only buying the food you are going to eat. The dustbin is usually the best fed family member because everyone 'nibbles' before the big meal. Cook only what people like. Now would be a good time to put the sprouts on!

Sounds like a good idea but children get so much these days there would be no point only giving them 1 present Christmas morning?

That's an excellent idea, and one that we've been implementing for years. Why spend all that money to buy gifts when the very next day everything goes on sale? I figure Christmas should be about spending time with your family, and if you want to do the gift thing, then do it practically when it won't push you over your budget.

Instead of buying gifts why not try giving your time. Say offer a free housecleaning or a free lawnmowing, etc....or for older adults a free ride to the doctor or the grocery store. Sometimes just spending time with family is a more pleasureable gift. For younger kids offer a trip to the park or a day filled with game playing.

that,s a great idea from an adults prospective
but can you imagine a young child losing the suprise of opening their Christmas boxes, then having to tell there Friends that they only got 1 pressy for Christmas

and then adults losing boxing day to go shopping with the kids not very relaxing is it
but nonetheless a good idea
