I was just reading an article about the lady who plays Penny Pocket on Balamory. For those who don't know, she is a wheelchair user. She was discussing how people criticised her for being a (single) mother and implied that she should not have children as she is disabled. I just wondered if there anyone else out there who took this view?

For the record, I think this an appalling view to take.

I just got hired (yahoo!) to work for a local special recreations program. The program is designed for students who are disabled in some way to become productive members of the community through learning basic life skills. I do not know what types of disabilities my students have, but will be assisting with planning and executing activities for the students.

So my question is if anyone has suggestions for their favorite activities that they have used in this situation. If you can also give me some ideas on activities that are NOT good for specific conditions (autism for example), please feel free to let me know about this too.

Thanks!

I was really upset to see a news interview this week with a man who has AIDS, who admited he got it from using IV drugs, saying he receives assistance for his mortgage payment, he takes taxis everywhere that are paid for, that he doesnt have to do without anything. The AIDS association pays for his internet, bought him a computer, pays someone to do his housework, his yardwork, etc.

He is also completely mobile, not yet incapacitated by AIDS.

This really angers me, WHERE is this same support for people with MS, ALS, CP, MD, Post Polio, and other disabilities that are debilitating? No one is paying mortgages for these other disabled people, or for taxis etc. And their disabilitiy is not the result of a life style choice.

WHY does our society treat people who became disabled through choice as if they are such poor deserving "victims" while other disabled people are basically ignored and marginalized?

I dont even know what to call this kind of discrimination.

Another question on this board got me thinking about this and it's something I've been curious about for a while. I'm asking because I have a disability - actually various physical disabilities resulting from a brain injury - and I am in graduate school. I'm considering getting a PhD after I get my Master's. I am just curious what people with disabilities go through when they decide to become professors and I'd also like to hear from students who've had a professor with a disability. What was your experience like? Thanks guys!

It's not a terrible disability, but it does make my life a little harder sometimes. It's very rare that any public works project or manufacturer take people like me into consideration at all when designing things. When you find out what it is, I bet you'll think I'm just a whiner. But think about this: how often are things color-coded? Ever park on the blue level of a parking garage? Press the red button to stop, green to start? Things like that don't make my life easy. When people find out I'm colorblind, they even 'test' my colorblindness by asking me what color things are. If you have ever done that, don't you see that it would be like saying to a guy in a wheelchair "okay, see if you can tippy toe...No? Really? Okay, now see if you can go up these stairs" just for your entertainment.

Well, for example, my friends bf mother unfortunately had come down w/cancer on tongue [6 yrs. ago]
she had quit smoking YEARS ago.
anyway, she had to have her tongue removed but wrote down on a peice of paper to her stepson, it was "the best thing that ever happened to her in the long run, because now she see's everyday as a blessing, and feels/gives love to other's more deeply." [which b4 she wasn't like that at all. her disability changed her as a person within, and she's happier on many other levels than beforehand]
IF YOU have a disability, what has it taught you that you can TEACH OTHER'S who aren't so greatful in some area(s) in life??
Please share

What's the point of posting a question asking for OPINION but then blocked anyone who doesn't agree. Doesn't the person realise that they will end up having no one being able to answer their question at all? Or they want that to happen so they can say - No one like them or that they are discriminated against because they have a disability? We are all here trying to help each other by answering and supporting each other. But that does not mean we have to always agree. Isn't that the way it should be?

Disability
Question Details: I am 80% compensated from the VA and i still work for the fed govt now, however i am going out on medical disability retirement. The question i have is this; on the OPM forms for disability they ask about if i am receiving any type of compensation from the VA. I am to assume that they mean as a retiree from the military for which i am NOT, so will my receiving money from VA affect my case for disability from civil service. I am under FERS...THANKS...Tony

I asked for help earlier and I have been called a scammer and a liar. I really wish I had never signed on and asked anyone for help. I will sit here a die before I will ask for help ever again. For the people who think I am lying here is the printout from my power company. I apologize for bothering everyone. I will not do it again. I was reported and I have never been reported on the internet for ANYTHING. PREVIOUS BALANCE $595.64
PAYMENTS RECEIVED SINCE LAST BILL ($277.00)
LATE PAYMENT FEE $3.22
OTHER ADJUSTMENTS $3.00
ELECTRIC $375.71
SERVICE CHARGE $13.75
SEC LIGHT $8.75
SALES TAX $11.95

TOTAL CURRENT BILL $410.16
(Plus past due which is due by the 13th) I pay everything I can on the bill but it is hard but that is also my problem and I had no right to ask for help.
