seems like alot of people got offended on this one... i dont think you were trying to be upsetting... going with that thought, let me give my opinion...
i think the question was just you were wondering why usually the only place you see developmentally disabled people employed is in the supermarket (instead of other places like resturants, bookstores, ect ect)
it really comes down to what the individual person is capable of mentally - grocery store clerk has a very easy task set to learn for anyone and it doesnt change alot, so not a problem training wise or multitasking wise...it is a job that is needed, a job they take pride in doing well. a supermarket is a place that is willing to put the extra patience into their employment and or training because the the job is so hard to fill since most 'average' people think they are 'too good' to work as a sacker.. and it is also a place where they are at a low risk of physical harm and can be monitored more to make sure they are not being mistreated by other people - fellow employees or customers... its just you dont see them working anywhere else as much... but there are other jobs they do just as well.. you just dont see them. its just most (not all) of them need a job where they can focus on one job at a time...
as much as you might want to say that you are older psyco-social wise, in all honesty we need all kinds of people to make the world go round. most of the developmentally disabled people that i have been around (not just supermarkets but also janitors, assembly) take more pride in a job well done than more 'average' or 'bright' people do...and they seem to always have a much better attitude than 'average' people do.

Most people with disability are loyal to their job, they don't leave as quickly as other works because they know how hard it is to get a job. The supermarket manager most likely find they are good at doing their job and found great value in them as an employer.
Yes there is subsidy for hiring works with a disability. But if they couldn't do their job they will not stay in their job.

Businesses are able to get special tax credits for hiring the disabled workers -- these employees work very hard and are dependable. The developmentally disabled people attend work-training schools, workshops, and work in partnership with some businesses.

Because they have a right to work like any body else. Plus they are making a living for them selves. All of them that I have met are for the most part more friendly than the ones that are not.

Clearly they are being hired because they are the people who have applied for those jobs that are the most qualified, dependable, and loyal....and they happened to be disabled.

the government pays a subsidy for businesses that hire handicapped workers.(our bookstore hired 2 downsyndrome workers and the manager said the vocational development center pays the store to hire them.their vocational counselors check on them by visiting them at work once a month.both are gr8 people and excellent workers.)

perhaps what they "get" is the smiles they see on the developmentally diasbled people's faces given the fact that someone is giving them a chance to work and make a living
