If someone never progresses beyond the mental capacity of a 1 or two year old, they will have no concept of toilet training.

Also spinal injuries can cause loss of bowel and bladder control.

Here's one I bet nobody thinks of, low back problems can do this.

I have a very close friend, who is not very old, and has some major problems with her back and she has both of these problems. She had no problems before her injury, however, her doctor told her this could very well happen and to be aware of it....and it did. She may have to have surgery to correct whatever it is that's causing it.

My brother has prune belly syndrome and was completely incontinent (urine incontinence) til he was 18. After a few surgeries to reduce his bladder size, he just now is able to control it. However, if he sleeps to long he'll be incontinent. That's just one that I know of.

I know if you have a herniated disk it can cause you to lose control of your bowels until the problem is resolved.
