I was just reading an article about the lady who plays Penny Pocket on Balamory. For those who don't know, she is a wheelchair user. She was discussing how people criticised her for being a (single) mother and implied that she should not have children as she is disabled. I just wondered if there anyone else out there who took this view?

For the record, I think this an appalling view to take.

isotope - I don't think you read my question properly. I stated at the beginning it was something I had read, and NOT my opinion. I also stated at the end of my question that I don't agree with the sentiment. For the record, my father was a wheelchair user, and a fabulous parent.

Unless the person is mentally "not there" there should not be any reason why the person should be denied that gift. Obviously if the woman is not mentally mature enough then something should be said..

Then on the other side...if the father of the child was there to help then there shouldn't be a problem.. Just because someone is physically disabled shouldn't bar them from having children. There are special circumstances in EVERY situation. I don't necessarrily agree with anyone being told they can't have a child..I think circumstances surrounding are all special whether they are disabled or not. Some people who are able-bodied shouldn't have children and they do!!

My son is in a wheelchair..if anyone told him not to have children because he is in a wheelchair I would tear them apart..

Yes all people have the right to have children.
I was told by my doctors , that I'd never be able to have children. That even if I did they wouldnt be "normal" meaning healthy, or bright or happy.
They said this because I have epilepsy. However I never relied on anyone for advice about this part of my own choices or life . I just left it in god's hands, if He wanted me to have kids He would make it right for me to , ensure that what or if I did have any I'd be able to handle them.
Disabilities , or limits don't make us a bad parent. There are blind and deaf parents that raise their children up to be bright, caring, and happy healthy people that make a difference in our world. It can also give those with the limitations another way to find out what they can or cant do, and a reason to try to learn more and step outside the box the world puts them in. To show what they're truly made of.

My kids, are both advanced , honor students, healthy happy , and full of life. I know God was with them and me through out my prenancies , and kept them from harm . They have been my miracles in life ( beside a few other things) that kept me looking ahead instead of back. I learn new things everyday , from being a parent. Children are precious and a gift from God. So disablities don't stop us from living life in that way.
The world just likes to try to discourage us from reaching our goal or finding happiness for us.

If the disability is one that is going to be passed onto the child then I think they should definitly not have children, it would be cruel to deliberately inflict a disability on someone and they (the disabled parent) of all people should know that.
Additionaly, if the disability will prevent the parent from being able to care for the child, ie. if they are going to need extra help constantly in caring for the child, then again I think they should not have children.

OK-first I have to catch my breath, because the thought of someone telling a disabled person that they shouldnt have children kind of gets my goat. I know there are people who feel this way and have no trouble expressing their views. Number one I'd suggest that they mind their own business and second I'd tell them that disabled people make great parents. There are a lot of "able bodied" people who I'm not too sure of. Maybe they should see some movies we made about how people with all kinds of disabilities have children-go to work and handle their daily lives just fine. OK-I feel better. Thank you for listening.

after all the answers I have read, I will say this. i have never seen, in all my years dealing with social services, have they brought before the court, disabled parents. I know of alot of able-bodied parents, that should not be allowed to have kids, and they are crappy parents. Kids are a gift, I guess, but I think if they can take care of the kid(s), great. then why should it matter? For the most part, disabled parents are better at teaching their kid(s) empathy for others. I don't consider myself disabled, per se, even though i have Asperger's. I am just a person who likes to be left alone with my family, and have no one knock at my door. ( nuttin wrong with that!)

I know someone who is in a wheelchair and has been for the majority of her life and who had 5 kids, 12 grandkids and 2.5 great grandkids. Her husband was close to useless , she worked and still managed to raise those kids.

I think it depends on the individual. I'm legally blind , I didn't want to have children but had I wanted to that would have been MY business and nobody else's.

I must admit I do have a problem with people who are very severely intellectually impaired having children because I'm not sure mentally they're capble of caring for and nuturing a child to full adulthood, but that's just my personal bias.

Hitler used to feel this way. The first people who were killed by murderers who would eventually become Nazis were institutionalized children with serious disabilities. Sadly in United States history there are accounts of people with disabilities being subjected to involuntary sterilization up until the 1970s. This was based on "eugenics." Only the lowest low life would deny a person with disabilities a normal life.

In the United States, we are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is for all people not some. Also, how can anyone dare to imply what people with disabilities should be "allowed" to do. Check out the attached website.

Personally I think there are alot of misconception, mis-understandings and ignorance regarding disabled people and there ability to adapt to their disabilities! Able bodied people rend to fear disabled people from a selfish point of view as they don't know ow they would cope (on a personal level) with that disability. They then assume that disabled person can not cope or is a drain on the system and judge accordingly. This could not be further from the truth. Alot of disabled people have a fortitude, bravery and willingness to adapt that able bodied people don't. Therefore on that basis alone it is disgusting that people should contemplate judging a disabled person for having a child!
