People often refer to this 'moderate Muslim' faction of the world, but I've no evidence of their existence.
I don't think there are many moderate Muslims--i.e. Muslims who are not dogmatic/brainwashed, believe what they believe but don't wish to impose their beliefs/ways on any non-Muslim, live in reality, etc.
The few 'moderate' Muslims you hear about are ex-Muslims like Salman Rushdee!
Even in intellectual communities of the Middle East, thought is heavily clouded by dogma and fear.
Why was there no mass outcry in the Muslim world against the 9/11 attacks, for example? Sure, there were INDIVIDUAL Muslims here and there who condemned them, but generally, after the attacks, what did we hear from the Muslim world? Silence... that silence spoke VOLUMES.
Even those countries the U.S. doesn't really get along with these days, like France and Germany, wholeheartedly CONDEMNED the attacks. They set aside their political differences with the U.S.
NOT the Muslim world!
