I had a dream one night, where I asked an amish person what it was like to be them and I got dressed up as one and spent the day as an amish person.

Being from Indiana, Amish people can be found just about anywhere throughout the state here. And from my experience, they are incredibly genuine, helpful and kind. To me that alone is worth a try.

I don't think I could commit to the dresses that the women wear or any of it for a long period of time cuz I have spent many hours in an Amish house. My husbands family is Amish, he is no longer Amish, he left when he was 17, but we go to visit about once a year. The one incredible thing that everyone doesn't see first hand is how the family is so close and they really respect each other! That would be the one part I could live with forever but the rest of their lifestyle is probably what makes them that way more so than anything else.

So to answer the question, I really don't have to decide cuz I get just enough of a taste of what it would be like without going the whole nine yards. I like spending the time there but trust me, it's not for me to go into fully even for a whole day. I find that I miss many things after a week there! It is a humbling experiance though.

Yes, I would love to live the day of Amish, for one day or more. The Amish are good, God loving People. They live a simple, good life. The women are great cooks from scratch and sew wonderful clothes. To harness up a horse to a cart and travel around the farm. To work in the gardens and help prepare the food for the day. To bake the wonderful bread and with the side dish of home churned butter. No computers, telephones, or electricity. I lived like this as a kid, and remember going to the outhouse , even in the cold of winter. But I was not an Amish. They are friendly in their own group. But I would not like to dread trusting the outsiders. Or the public. It would be frightening to run into all the people who were not Amish. I would not want to think I am more loved by God then the outside Public. I would only like to be an Amish for no more then one week.

I used to live in Amish country (Ohio) and I have to be honest - there is no way I could live their lifestyle.

I'm not being facetious, I'm envious. After what happened that horrible day when those poor girls were brutally murdered, that entire community got together and PRAYED. There were no shouts of anger, no calls for vengeance, just honest, simple prayer; prayer for the girls, prayer for their families and even prayers for the shooter and his family.

These people are the embodiment of what a true Christian is and what the rest of us should aspire to be. If something like this happened to my family, I really don't know if I could "turn the other cheek." God bless the entire Amish and Mennonite communities.

definitely! the rat race and the sad way people go about their lives today, often gives me pause.

the amish have a more solid, quiet way of life. The part i'd miss would be technology, but certainly not todays people.

i don't think that they take too kindly to us 'outsiders'.
but, sure, in the sense of gaining perspective into other people's cultures, i'd love to see what it's all about.
i personally believe that as we get to know other people, we help eliminate stereotypes and prejudice.
it could be fun, too.
