What is a Mason?

Referring to a Mason as a member of a fraternity:

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. Officially the roots of the fraternity can be traced back to the 1700's in England and Scotland. Masons come from every walk of life, every economic background, every race, and nearly every religion. Mason used to build castles, cathedrals and other works of architecture - now Masons build men of character...men who are involved in charitable works, men who value friendship, men who are interested in doing the right thing for the people around them, themselves and the communities in which they live. Masonry is not a secret society as many people would like you to believe - Masonic Lodges are listed in the phone book - members are proud to be Masons and there is nothing to hide. There are a few words and handshakes that are only shared with fellow Masons. This is no more secretive than the activities of most fraternities or tightly knit groups.

Persons desiring to become a Freemason only need to be an upright person and profess a belief in a Supreme Being - that can be God, Buddha, Allah, The Great Spirit or any other name you want to give the Supreme Being. Those are the requirements. You don't need to be rich (I make under $25,000 a year), good looking or have an IQ of 160. Masons welcome men of all walks and stations of life.

Masons use an old fashioned way of addressing the officers of the lodge - and it is a tradition from the 1700s. The "president" of the lodge, who is elected by the members is called the "Worshipful Master". This means respectful leader in Modern English. Senior and Junior Wardens can be considered vice presidents (most Christian churches still have Junior and Senior Wardens that serve to guide the church for a year or more). Senior and Junior Deacons assist the Wardens. Stewards, which is what male flight attendants were called years ago, serve refreshments and assist where needed. There is a Secretary and Treasurer who do just what their name implies. There is a Marshal, who like a marshal at a parade helps guide people around.

Masonry is not a secret society, it is not a religion, it is not a group of rich white people. Masonry is a fraternity that builds friendship, respect and good citizens.

1. A mason is a person who works with bricks or stones, to build structures.
2. A mason is a person who is a member of a faternal organization. ( a lodge)

As far as the social aspect, Masons are men who believe you should be accepted as who you are and it shouldn't matter what religion you are. You only need one reqiurement to join, the belief that there is only one God. That requirement alone should tell people that the masons are in no way satanic.

It depends. There are different types. As far as careers go, masons are bricklayers, etc. As far as social organizations, they are members of a brotherhood so to speak. Somewhat similar to a fraternity.
