I hear people making fun of emo-kids or emo-rock? What is this exactly? My guess is that it is the whiney depressed attitude we used to call "goth". Is that right?

Stereotypical emo-kid:
An emotional teenager. They like to listen to funny bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, etc. They shop at Hot Topic (or on Queen Street in Toronto). They wear a lot of eyeliner, whether they are male or female. They usually have black hair, cut short in the back and swept in a side part to cover at least one eye. Sometimes, another colour might be added in with the black (ex. red). They kind of hunch over when they walk and wear thick black-rimmed glasses. They like black Converse All-Stars and tight pants. Chains are nice, and looking anorexic is big. Cutting themself and being "depressed" is big too.

It's not nice to label people, but that's a stereotypical emo-kid...and is what people are usually talking about when they say "emo-kid".

This term has gotten out of hand. Emo is "emotional". As in they show their emotions a bit more than others do. But now it has turned into a group that wears all black and listens to music that is emotional/depressing. So yes, emo and goth are related. But goths don't have to be emotional.

The term originally referred to a style of music. The bands would play heart-felt punkish songs and would sometimes be seen to tear up while delivering them, so they were distinguished by this emotionality.

It wasn't too long before the term started to be applied to a lot of other things. The listeners of 'emo' music, the kinds of clothes such people supposedly wore, and the whole scene altogether. Which is part of the reason you see it in a lot of places.

Now it's used largely in a derogatory sense to describe someone who is pointlessly emotionally overwrought. There being lots of overwrought people and lots of people who like to fling names around, this is another major reason why you see the term everywhere!

They are not like Goths AT ALL!!!! Or PUNKS!!! they are the preppy kids that want to be punk or goth but they don't have the personality set for it. Nor do they have any real problems so they seem to whine a lot, and get depressed over nothing...
