The federal definition of Hispanic is vague in that it treats hispanics as an ethnic class rather than racial one. As such, most places touched by Spanish imperialism and most Spanish-speaking countries are included. Many Filipino organizations want Filipinos to be recognized as Hispanics due to their indisputable colonization, use of language and culture, and many undeniable Spanish lineages. My mother's side can be traced fairly easily to Spain, so does that mean I can check that magic little Hispanic box?
