Accents are cool, no matter where you are from, but a faked accent is THE WORST! People think they can fake a (British, French, Italian...) accent to make themselves look cooler, but it ends up being very sad indeed. I myself have a thick Seattle accent- most noticed in words like pen/pin or tent/tint.

absolutely english is the only language in the world that has words omitted while speaking and people trying to sound pretentious or cool .. ask any native english speaker who is multilingual if theres is any other language spoken in a cool funky manner
after all language's main goal is just communication not promoting style im sorry ppl but the english language is the most pretentious sounding thing ever and i guess the easiest to learn maybe .. and the moment non native english speakers start conversing in english the air of pretense and arrogance sets in.... i doubt any language in the world be it arabic or japanese sounds so STYLISH as ..the english ....
the kids in the british society at 8 or 10 feel conscious about their looks and everything because the whole society is so superficial .. please leave the kids alone atleast till 13 save the bulload for adulthood

No, I do not think the British accent is pretentious. the British just sound more intelligent than some because of their accent and I am also impressed by their grammer/proper use of the English language.

The accent does not bother me, as a Texan I have one too, it's the facial expressions that go along with the accent that annoy me at times like some of the British are looking down their nose when they talk.

I'm from South Africa and I have a very British accent. Kids used to make fun of me at school; I once asked my mom why I spoke that way, I was very small: she said, well darling, daddy's english; you've always loved the theatre; oh, and you're a dreadful snob. So, no I don't think it's pretentious. People think I'm pretentious but trust me, it's not because of the way I speak: you know my mean?

Nope, I love a British accent in women. In fact, I've saved a telemarketer(with a british accent) message on my answer machine.

no when you were born you have no accent of your own so you learn from the people around you and thats how everyone in the particular area has that accent. there is no way that a british accent is "showy" in any way. although their attitude is a bit snobbish to me.
