they jump at the chance to criticise white men who are easy targets and not protected by political correctness but never say a word about islam, a society in which women are not only considered and treated as inferior but often given beatings for disobeying their husbands. love to know why!

I heard that some people in Haiti spoke Spanish along with French; my friend says that she considers herself latino because her mother is a Black Hatian and her father is a white Haitian.

I have been told that Pakistan history of their independence struggle is totally different from that of India's. Mahatma Gandhi and all Indian leaders are negatively portrayed, only muslim leaders are shown to have contributed postively. Everything is portrayed on the basis of religion...Is this true?

If this is, then this is pathetic since this was never a religious struggle, it later evolved into one after the demand of Pakistan.

I just hate some countries and their religious mentalities; they need to grow up...

Just an observation from my personal experiences with blacks. It seems as if blacks are more comfortable in 75-85 degree rooms while whites tend to find 68-75 more comfortable. Is there a genetic predisposition to prefering cooler or warmer climates ? Obviously, the black race came from Equatorial Africa, while whites came from temperate Europe, so maybe it is genetic.

I'm not racist, but I think there are some stereotypes which have some merit. I went to schools which were around 35% black (in Florida).African American students would put on a sweater when the school had its thermostat set at 72 degrees. I once had 2 black roommates who would turn the heater on when it was 65 degrees outside. Even blacks in cooler climates hate cold weather. I now live in Denver which is around 30% black and I have NEVER seen a black person in the mountains west of Denver(which are substantially colder).

People in Toronto often like to joke that Toronto is cleaner than Switzerland. Toronto has a very high crime rate, and a high number of homicides.

What's It Like?

I’m used to a life on bare soles: I haven’t worn shoes since December 2000 (with a few exceptions!) and I don’t think I’ll EVER imprison my feet again! I’ve been walking barefoot since my schooldays, but not every day, not everywhere… It was a winter morning back in 2000, just after Christmas: I was ready to board my flight to India. My feet were already bare while I was waiting for the train which would take me to the airport. The air was a bit chilly, and I noticed a couple of people, staring at my feet, obviously unable to believe what they saw: A pair of bare feet, decorated with a leather-anklet and a shiny little toering… I didn’t know that I was about to leave Europe for good, returning only occasionally for short visits. But I was ready for the big adventure: Spending many month on the road, exploring almost every nook and corner of India on my bare soles – from Kanyakumari to Gangtok and from Gujarat to West Bengal… It was SO much fun! I didn’t even carry any shoes in my backpack, and soon, my soles were tough as leather! Finally, the unexpected happened: I managed to settle down in India! I’ve been able to live my life barefoot ever since… Has anybody else decided to live barefoot, to stop wearing shoes, never wearing them again?

I’m from Germany but I’m living in India – it’s almost six years now that I’ve left Europe for good – and I’m used to a life on bare soles: I haven’t worn shoes since December 2000 (with a few exceptions!) and I don’t think I’ll EVER imprison my feet again! INDIA – it still means: Bare feet EVERYWHERE, especially in rural areas and the South, but also in cities and parts of the North! And I don’t think that will change within a lifetime! Half of the people in my neighbourhood (a typical “mixed area” with modern houses and traditional enclaves side-by-side) are barefoot throughout the year! Dusty bare feet, immune to the heat of summer, to sharp gravel and other hazards are a common sight, so common that you’ll hardly notice them anymore after a month or so. It’s true: I’m still getting attention for my lack of footwear, but not because I’m barefoot but because I’m a FOREIGNER (“ferengi”) who is barefoot! And reactions are almost always positive… I don’t think my Indian neighbours are walking barefoot ‘cause they can’t AFFORD shoes: Flip flops are available for less than 1 Euro, and if those 50 Rupees would really matter for them - well, in that case you wouldn’t see people riding their bicycle barefoot! But there are many… My impression: It’s not about poverty, it’s their CHOICE to live without shoes – these people feel it’s UNNECESSARY to imprison their feet! Is there anyone from India, from Asia reading this? Or from any other corner of our world where kids grow up barefoot and don’t have to surrender to the pressure of a shod majority once they’re adults? Any expat who’s lucky enough to live in a place like India, a place where bare feet are still normality? What do you think: Is it a sign of poverty or a personal choice to live barefoot?
