Generally most americans I've met have always been nice and very friendly, but when I was in California I thought they were the nicest (and wonderfully liberal too). I took the amtrack across the US from California to the east-coast. The best people on the train were the californians. The people that got on at salt-lake were weirdos, and the guys who got on the train between chicago and schenectady looked like they'd just got of jail (Buffalo was the worst), the New Yorkers were really impatient, but californians were great, so friendly and chilled the whole journey.
