Take this situation:

A train is comng down the track to a turnout.

On one track are 10 people, on the other is 1 person.
All are innocent
The train is heading for the 10 people

Would you flick the switch and kill the one person to minimise the death, or would you let nature take its course.

What ever your answer, would changing the numbers make a difference - what if it was 2 people, 5, 100 ???

Also, would the type of person make you change your mind. If there were 10 kids on the track, and one homeless drunk, would you flick the switch ????

No "cheating answers" please - things like "i'd run across and flick the switch and push the one person out of the way"....

So, I can't figure this out for crap. Just to get a small background, I am 24 and am very optimistic (unless it concerns my own problems) I generally do not get mad at people... and, if for some reason I do (which is very far and few between), I get over it within 5 or 10 minutes. Lately, I've noticed that I've been getting irritated much quicker than I used to and it has gotten to the point were just one wrong thing said can get me mad (especially with my own family). It's really driving me crazy. I realize like a minute or 2 after that there was no need to get mad and wonder why I just went off like that. Why is this happening? Have I reached my limit? How do I release my anger inside without taking it out on anyone. I've already tried screaming along with various songs in my car (For example, "Shut Up" by Simple Plan and "Young and Hopeless" by Good Charlotte) but it's only working like 15% of the time. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

I'm a professional woman w/ a good job. I began shoplifting a few years ago & it's getting out of control. I have the money with me to buy the item, but I don't. I find myself being careless & shoplifting more and more items - taking ridiculous risks. They are not items I need, sometimes I even forget what I have taken until I find it in my purse or pocket a few days later. It's so bad that if I'm alone in a room I actually look for something to take- it seems I hate to leave empty handed. I take a variety of things - from cheap to expensive. Of course I do not want to get caught, it would damage my career, not to mention the embarassment - I'm a mother and a grandmother also. I cannot seem to help myself, the impulse to take something is irresistable. Please, please help me. I want to quit this terrible habit but I can't seem to muster up the willpower.

And, if it is due to the soundwaves(or whatever sensation) exciting a neurological stimulus, how would you account for the neurological states being resultant of an arbitrary stimulus, i.e. the physical properties of a language's sound waves are different. Thus neurologically speaking, the stimulus associated with the word "love" in the sound based neurosystem isn't the same across the spectrum of languages. Keep in mind that i'm talking about soundwaves, not brain-states.

What i'm saying is that though the stimulus is different, the result is the same. Further, what i'm trying to suggest is that emotion is arbitrary based on that fact, such that you're emotional state is your choice. There may be physical states related to love, but that doesn't have much to do with what i'm trying to say here, which is that the initial stimulus for that emotion is arbitrary; "Love" does not exist, it's just a soundwave. So, How can a person's words effect emotional status?

I understand entirely why people tend to hit things when they are ticked. What I can't understand is why the only thing I want to harm when angry is myself.

Three years in and out of psychiatric care has lead me to the conclusion that I'll do better if I learn what to do on my own, but it's obvious that the internet does not tell you everything the same way the psycho-whatevers don't allways give you the why of your actions, at least not when you're a minor. I need the why, and from there I can figure out what to do about it.

No, I am not reffering to cutting. That is fairly understood at tthis point. I'm talking about this weird reflex type deal where I wail on the sides of my own head or my fore-arm. Even when I was younger I'd beat my head against the wall, and after an incedent today I started wondering why I do it. I don't think I blame myself for all my problems, but it may be due to the fact that there sure as hell ain't anyone willing to admit their mistakes.

Im a person who cant make up my mind about anything easily. Im always worried about how I look to other people. I mean at the end of the day what matters? That I am happy right? We all have to make dscisions and live with them right, dont we all hate to have what ifs in our hearts. Im always asking opinions of others, Im easily swayed from what I want to do. Is that a a sign of weakness.

Even if I have clear ideas and thoughts about something, if i find one or 2 ppl who disagree, like my 2 bestfriends. I feel like everything I felt is wrong... I feel like i should live my own life and make descions on my own stupid or not. But then I also feel liek if someone went through a particular situation that Im in, and they did certain things to make it work, I should listen to their advice.

Recently learned that my supervisor lied. I have proof. I'm his partner on a project at work. I found out by accident that he didn't really do what he said he did. It really disturbed me & disappointed me.Learning this info showed that he has no respect for me. My admiration & my respect for him is now tarnished. I've been giving him the cold shoulder & avoiding him.
This project involved exercising the elderly. In the past, I made a list of names for him to exercise with when I'm too busy. Some of these elderly can't speak for themselves because of dementia. Upon learning this disturbing relevation, now I wonder if he's been doing what I requested him to do in the past. These elderly people need to be exercise for a reason. Actually, he did their assessments. I want to let him know how I feel re this info but at the same time I don't want to embarass him. I can report him but I think this should just be between the two of us. I want to write him a note instead of face to face.

A relationship ended very badly between my ex and I. We exchanged very hurtful words. We never did in our whole relationship. Anyhow, another girl was involved and he believed mcuh of what she said, just to find out much was a lie, yet he still is friends with her, yet he treats me so badly. He was very cruel and wont even talk to me now. Because I foundout somethings he kept from me which she told me. I know you are only hearing my side. But I mean it when I say I did nothing wrong, he knows this. Anyhow, it would be nice to know he is sorry, I dont think he is. I feel sooo sad about what he's done to me. He is like night and day. I have tried to confront him and he only gets more aggravated, like I was the worst person in the world. It bothers me because I am trying to understand something that doesn't makse sense to me. Is it b/c i know too much now, and he is ashamed.?

I was wondering, since our climate and world is evolving, is our brains evolving more? They say we only use a percentage of our brain, meaning we do not use it to our full capacity. And our world is every day evolving into the digital world with more wireless components, Satelites, fiber optics, etc.. So wouldn't it be possible that, with all the, I guess "Static" in the air, that our brain would start to develope a, sort of advancement?

My story is set in the early Victorian era.
There is a man named Edward. Edward's brother (John) has been ill for a very long time, and Edward has an affair with John's wife. That woman gets pregnant after John dies. Edward's family is very obssessed with retaining their good reputation, so Edward's sister orders John's wife to have her child aborted (is this possible? or is this too exagerated...forcing someone to have an abortion for the sake of retaining a good reputation?)And Edward doesn't do anything to stop it, as he is a self-centered man, who cares about his reputation and the reputation of the family. Anyways, years~~ later, how would this incident affect Edward, Phsycologically?

Would he still be obssessed with his reputation? Or would he have turned into a rake who didn't care for the public's opinion of him, now knowing what harm he had caused for the sake of his good reputation.

Anyways, please think hard! How would this incident have affected him?
