Most Americans have a reading level today on the level of a 12 year old during the 1960's and it remains that way till their adulthood. Major newspapers in the US are written on a 5 th or 6 th grade reading level. Does this have a connection with the lack of culture?

I am going to major in anthropology (I am leaning towards cultural but I would also like to have a good physical backgroud too) after I am done with my gen ed at my local CC. Does anyone know of some schools in CA that have good anthro programs? I have been considering UCSB and UCSC, does anyone know about their programs, or is there any other places you would suggest checking out in CA? My long term goal is a phd. Thanks!

"Belly and the Other Members" by Aesop is helpful in appreciating this new application of research? Nature magazine reports Dec 06 that stomach microbes may "lead to a way of fighting malnutrition" around the world! Jeffrey Gordon, Washington University Genome Sciences says, "For decades, doctors have treated bacteria in a WARLIKE manner, yet most encounters we have with (the unseen world of) microbes are very beneficial."
1st response: This fable has an all-time value: never look down on backstage-lowest level work. People on top have many more supporting people performing menial/humbler tasks. Regarding the beneficial action of bacteria, "stomach microbes" are indispensable, but they can become harmful if they migrate to other organs. For example, there are microorganisms which eat dead cells and renew our skin, but on bed sheets, they can make an asthma situation worse. Connecting this to the fable, just do not underestimate what you think is too small or not visible to the eye.

I'm thinking of pursuing a career in anthropology. That means at least four years of graduate school (probably more). Is it worth my time and money?

A century ago people were shorter than they are today. From the numbers I've seen, the increase among women (who used to average 5' 2" just 30 years ago, and 5' 4" a decade ago, but now are over 5' 5") is happening faster than that among men (5' 7" 30 years ago, 5' 8" a decade ago and a bit over 5' 8" now).

Is it possible that, in North America and Europe, in a few generations, women will be as tall as men?

We all know how others judge by race and gender, but is judging another by his/her age any less 'evil'?

I understand the other implications about race, religion, etc. But with this kind of responsibility; to make sure that the human race survives, would you hope for the best and procreate with another mammal animal, e.g. ape, chimpanzee, etc?

I've been reading some of the questions on this page. Man, some of you are just ignorant. I'm a history student and some people rather point the finger then say a something constructive. For example there was one question about the Egyptians. The question is why do historians claim the Egyptians were not black? Well me being a history student it's jelously. You know why? Why do whites always want to say they made everything, it's not true. We had the first empire. No they say, we must of gotten help from another race (white) it's so subliminal. Why can't people look past the melinin?

These are only a few of the African kings, check them out.
People need to open there eyes, Africa is a black country not a white one. Yes they were mixed, but are they not black?

does anyone really believe in race as anything other than a social restraint? Keep in mind that people of the SAME "race" can have more genetic variation than people of two different "races". What do you think? Would this mean that racism doesn't exist? This isn't a rhetorical question, either.

I have been studying anthropology and sociology and have come across many definitions of the word religion. I would like to ask everyone what is their understanding of the meaning of this word and what is a precise definition for religion, which might be used for the study of religion in general and the religion of certain persons, groups, etc ?

I am looking more for personal opinions than quoted resources of anthropologists, etc. In particular what are any ideas for overcoming the problems in studying religions from a social perspective. I especially do not like the study of religion as it is presented in anthropology books.
