Reading and viewing pictures actually stimulates different parts of the brain. When you're looking at pictures, you're activating your visual cortex primarily, and then you stimulate your frontal lobe (to interpret) and then possibly the parts of the brain stem that link to emotions, or the hippocampus (responsible for memories).

Reading, however, requires that you activate the parts of your brain that are specifically for language interpretation. There are many different functional areas of the brain for language, and depending on how you read, you'll activate different parts more heavily. There are areas if you're the type who reads and sees the pictures in your head (including the visual cortex again), or if you read and you hear the words read out loud in your head, of if you're a speed reader and grasp entire sentences, paragraphs or pages all in one go.

So, long story short, reading text engages more areas of your brain (therefore making you more tired) and often engages the same parts of your brain as viewing pictures does.

It depends on the kind of tiredness you mean. There is no question that reading is a more taxing activity then simply viewing images which require less processing by the logical and language centers in the brain. However, for that very same reason, I find that reading can be stimulating and images (in isolation) have a hypnotic effect.

Its relatively easy to stay up all night reading. Try watching television with the sound off and you will be hard pressed to do the same.

When reading text we feel more tired because our attention span is short, Less mental stimulation. By seeing pictures we do not get tired because the pictures are constantly changing, which in turn gives us more mental stimulation.

Are you asking because you're having a tough time reading text?

If you have difficulty reading text, you might try www.rfbd.org. You can get audio tapes and listen while you read, and it might help. You'll need to get a membership, though, if your school doesn't have one, and you'll need a diagnosis, so you might want to find someone to evaluate you.

reading text and numbers, think about it, do you get tired faster when you read or watch a movie? People might be different, but I get tired faster when I read, but I can watch a whole movie.

Reading text is usually more demanding on the eyes. Pictures, unless quite complex, do not demand so much work from your eyes.

pictures because your eyes take in the colours, the lines, the entire picture and your brain tries to memorize the pictures as it is while on text, it's just black and white and you've seen most of the words in the text like 'a" "and" "I" "him/her" so it's nothing new.
