I am going to major in anthropology (I am leaning towards cultural but I would also like to have a good physical backgroud too) after I am done with my gen ed at my local CC. Does anyone know of some schools in CA that have good anthro programs? I have been considering UCSB and UCSC, does anyone know about their programs, or is there any other places you would suggest checking out in CA? My long term goal is a phd. Thanks!

Berkley is good for cultural studies as is UCLA, but if you find that you want to go into any other branch of Anthropology, California is not as good as the east. Harvard, Penn State, and Yale all have excellent programs. Nebraska, Texas and SMU in the Midwest are also good. New Mexico and Arizona also have good programs. There are others as well, but I ask you; are you sure you want to major in anthropology before you find out what else college has to offer? It can be a hard life! Best education you can get though!

Way to go! I'm persuing the same degree only I will have a minor in Egyptology when I get my Ph.D. I am from Nebraska so I am not entirely sure of all the schools in California but I know that UCLA has a great program due to a good friend of mine who is going into their program soon. That is really the only school I know of. I do know that if you want to look outside of CA that the University of Chicago has a good program, the University of Colorado at Boulder has a great program (this is where I will be going ;), the University of Memphis in TN has a good program where I hope to obtain my MA and Penn State has a great program where Dr. Zahi Hawass of Egypt went to school and where I hope to obtain my Ph.D.
I hope that this helped you some.
