My brother-in-law, who is 18 and too smart for his own good, keeps telling everyone that the probability for any situation is 50/50. For example, if you ask him "will the Saints win the superbowl," his answer is, it's 50/50--which ignores the fact that they haven't gotten there. He says this is because either they will win or they will lose.

At nearly twice his age I am constantly frustrated with this line of reasoning, but am at a loss to explain why it is so wrong. Does it have to do with mutual exclusivity and probability? Help.

I hate batteries as well as all of the crappy wires that run everywhere supplying energy to everyone's home and businesses. Wind mills are a joke - we will see them as totallly archiac some day. Can't we collect energy utilizing Tesla's concepts into fuel cells to supply energy to the world? Then we wouldn't need nuclear or coal or gasoline....or is this too good and reasonable of an idea that the major corporations would only want to silence anyone with such an idea -- as happened to Tesla. Unlike his time, we are passed being ready for this timely innovation!!

Does the shortest day always fall on the twenty-first, or can it be affected by leap years, I ask this question because I have a calendar that says it was the twenty-second, so I mentioned this in the local cafe and was pounced upon by everyone.

If you use an analog radio frequency adjuster on a radio (the one that is actually a dial or a wheel, and is not digital) and move through all of the AM frequencies that are not used you end up hearing a lot of very different sounding interference and noise. Some of them have a thump-thump-thump and another has a shimmy-shimmy-shwaaa and yet another is just kwisshhshhiwahshsh.

So my question is, where do these sounds come from, and why are they different on the different frequencies? If you listen to FM it's all the same universal static at any frequency that is unused. What makes AM different from this?

The calendar day has 24 hours, whilst the Solar (Astronomical) day is exactly 23.56mins long. After 6 months you would have lost 12 hours (half a year =182 days * 4 / 60)

Therefore based on these simple caluculations, we would be 12 hours ahead of ourselfs. Where Day would be Night and Night would be Day? How comes we dont see the effects of this?

Also based on this accurate solar day of 23hours. 56mins, wouldn't we be gaining a day every year?
