make a van-der-graph generator

it is a motor powering a belt that rubs against a steel wool like brush, one at the bottom and one at the top to create static this is then hooked up to a small metal hemisphere (like a pasta strainer) and when someone touches the hemisphere it causes the persons hair to stand on end because the body becomes positively charged.

Dyeing of fabrics. Buy swatches of cotton (pure, not polyester blend), silk, wool, rayon, acetate, acrylic (Orlon), polyester (pure, not cotton blend). Buy natural dyes from a food store (turmeric, saffron). Buy Burrows solution from a drugstore (aluminum acetate, mordant). Intent: Find out which dyeing system gives greatest fastness (resistance) to washing. Divide the swatches of cloth into two groups. Those treated with Burrows solution mordant, and those not. Burrows solution: Calcium acetate [Ca(C2H3O2)2] plus aluminum sulfate [Al2(SO4)3] ===> CaSO4(insoluble) + aluminum acetate. You must act fast. Aluminum acetate hydrolyzes into insoluble aluminum hydroxide- oxide, which does do one any good. After mordanting half the swatches in Al acetate, immerse them in turmeric and saffron solutions (boil.) Let dry. Wash with soap and water. Let dry. Again and again until you discover the effect of dyes, mordant, and washing on one another. In addition to these natural dyes, you can try berries.
