Why doesn't the US start using the metric system when it is so much simpler and quicker than imperial?

1000mm = 1m 1000g = 1kg 1000ml = 1l
1000m = 1km 1000kg = 1t

Whats up 1760 yards in a mile? Surely that's just an unnecessarily awkward number. Wouldn't using the metric system save US industry loads of money in the long run.

As a gift, I was given an old locator's level. It is a steel box tube about 6" in length. It has a level bubble on top. There is a small peephole, and when you look through it, it has tick marks and a horizontal line. I guess it was used by surveyors to check elevation differences, but I am curious how it works.

Hi, for my GCSE DT courswork I need to make a piece of wood move outwards from a cupboard. I thought that there was such a thing as an electric pistion, but it seems not.
I did some research on wikipedia and found a linear motor. I found this, (http://www.zaber.com/products/product_group.php?group=T-LLS)

However this is too much money for me,or my school, so I either need a cheaper alternative or an easy(ish) way of making my own.

The sizes and weights are the same as the link above, Thanks.
