FALSE, you can make your own solar cell.

Ingredients include silicon and a metallic contact.
Silicon nanocrystals tend to be the most efficient type of silicon crystalline.

You can do this with a smaller amount of money the more you know about what materials are more efficient.

If you know how to build your own plasma conversion chamber you could easily make your own silicon nanocrystals.

Solar panels

to heat domestic water, water is passed thru' tubing laid inside boxes with two sheets of glass on top (aka double glazing) with enough boxes in full sunshine ....hot water

The tubing is a closed system and the water is passed thru' the indirect part of a hot water cylinder

The system needs some controls before it can be used with a hot water cylinder because it's not able to heat during the night for example

Solar panels that generate electricity (as seen on Nasa TV)
cost a lot (and probably will never recover the initial outlay; also depends where you live)

It really depends on the type of solar panel.
Light to Heat is easy and you can make in your garage.
Light to Electricity is much harder -- you probably need a million-dollar solar-cell factory.

You can't. You need hundreds of thousands of dollars of specialized machinery (and the expertise to use it) to manufacture solar cells.
