If I want to invent something and get it patented do I have to know how it works in its technical "way"? Is it enough to sketch your invention and explain what it does to get it patented.

i'm having a bit of an argument with my parents over my university major. my parents heard from some neighbour that their son is taking up software programme analysis in the future and that computers are a vital part of any job. now they're trying to change my choice of a university major. i want to take up chemical engineering and am really interested in it. either that or material engineering.
they seem to think that this particular neighbour of ours knows everything (omg) and they're getting relatives to advise me against chemical engineering as well. they seem to think that there is more money in software programme analysis. i'm not denying that fact, there must be more money in that area of work.
but the whole thing is that i'm not interested in working in computers, especially up to the 'analysis' level. i'm good at microsoft powerpoint, word and excel and have other basic skills that will probably be required anywhere.
can anyone tell me the benefits of chemical engineering

Somewhere I was reading about a large prize for the person who could invent a perpetual motion machine. I've been looking all over for it and havent been able to find it. Does anyone know of any contests or prizes dealing with the invention of a perpetual motion machine?

I had seen these images before, they supposedly show the WTC towers exploding right before the planes hit. The images are really blurry, like something you could make with the spray can in Paint. I really need these images, they are for a report.

Is there some hygienic or engineering reason why speed is necessary to dry clothes? I know that certain bacteria have to be killed; but can't that be done using less energy and heat?

Actually this is not my thinking yahoo QA member's question created this all.1 question can water run a car & 2 can we get free energy ? imagination is eye of soul, your action is my reaction, so these question compelled to find out a solution this is a small try.We all have to try to achieve.
A simple thinking not a joke:
1. Source: Carbide stone.
2. Water : drop water to carbide stone inside a closed cylinder.
3. Power : formation of high pressure gas according to the mixture of water&source accordingly.Required 2 cylinders.1 active one idle turn by turn.like steam engine eg.
4. Produces mechanical power according to hydraulic,Air pressure or steam engine .. rotary mechanical power.
5. Energy .. can get from rotating dynomo/alternato
6. Invest return: the gas which is used as pressure gas is stoped at a last point during work.when second cylinder start working the 1 st starts supplying gas to refill cylinders or a big tank can be refilled later.
Gas use for welding.

just wondering

and is it me or do these formulas don't work
(i converted them and they displayed nothing similar to any examples i were given)
according to lessons in electric circuit in their chapter for resonance they had a formula they worked out with an lc circuit and they had an outcome different from mine how can this be here it is

1/2pi sq rt(LC)

where
L=100mH
c=10uf

the outcome was
159.155HZ
i tried that on a scientific calculator and i came out with something completely different whats the deal am i doing something wrong
