Like ...if you had a container and you put the universe inside it...there would have to be a place to put it..... then there would be more space around that...
Then if you could contain the space around the container you'd have more space around that...and so on... and so on........where do you think it ends? This bugs me!
Has anyone else out there thought about this?

This might be some weird urban legend, but I heard a story (which I doubt, but might be possible) about one of the missions to the Moon where bacteria was implanted into the lunar soil. As it were, one of the missions involved covering a metal instrument with viruses (maybe staph), and then placing this instrument on the ground. Somehow, NASA determined that some of these viruses were still alive after several years. I'm not sure where this story originated. If this were true, and if some of our microorganisms were actually able to survive there, then a few of them might have adapted to life on the Moon under very harsh conditions, and we could have a lunar strain of (staph?) viruses, which would probably wreak havoc if brought back to Earth. Has anyone heard anything about this?

According to quantum theory, gravitational force is caused by interactions of subatomic particles called gravitons. In the case of relativity, it is caused by curved space-time continuum. But both the theories are right. How is this possible?

SlipSpace: is a science fiction term for a fictional method of faster-than-light space travel, similar to hyperspace travel, warp drive, or "transfer points" from David Brin's Uplift series.

Is it possible for a few hundereds years, or thousands of years from now, will we able to travel faster than light??
Are we distined to be doomed like the dinosours?

Earth supports life from single cell(ameoba) to complex inteligent life(humans(?)).Almost all species have offensive or defensive mechanisms to protect themselves if threatened. Is it then possible that the earth realises that it may be theatened by the life that it supports and decides it must take action by engaging its natural forces(volcanoes,earthquakes,typhoons/hurricanes etc.) to rid it of its enimies so that it can start again.

Our science teacher said we'd start talking about the universe and the Big Bang theory next week. I overanalyze stuff sometimes, so today in studyhall, i started thinking about what we're going to learn.
My thought:
If there was nothing before the Big Bang, how can "nothing" explode to form the universe.
A black hole rips apart matter until it's one atom...i think. So, maybe a black hole played a part?
Could the universe be a continous cycle: A black hole "consuming" everything, until there's "nothing", and then 'imploding' or exploding all of the matter?
That would explain a lot to me really.

All of the stuff I just said is my basic knowledge of space and time. I'm in eigth grade, so nothing confusing.

Oh, also...how does a black hole form: how does a "hole" get in the vacuum of space? I think it has something to do with a long-dead star, but i'm not sure.

Thanks so much. Sorry for so many questions.

In the 4th century AD in the Roman world, the length of the year was thought to be 365 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes, and 25.4 seconds (in modern units). The modern estimate for the vernal equinox year back then is 365d 5h 48m, 45.9s. How did the ancient philosopher / scientists figure the year with an error of less than 9 minutes?

does anyone think all the people on here who refute even the possibility of life outside our planet would be the same ones who just absolutely knew the word was flat if this was 500 years ago. my point is knowledge changes with time so why try to state something is absolutely wrong when we can't know for sure.
