does anyone think all the people on here who refute even the possibility of life outside our planet would be the same ones who just absolutely knew the word was flat if this was 500 years ago. my point is knowledge changes with time so why try to state something is absolutely wrong when we can't know for sure.

Knowledge may change with time, but the universal, objective truth does not.
Knowledge acquired through science will always bring us closer to the objective truth than knowledge acquired through authority or "revealed" doctrine.
Yes, it is pretty scary that so many people exist who commit such crimes against logic.
It may be easy to ignore and make fun of under-educated and easily misguided people, but I think it's better to educate them.

There is indeed a current Flat Earth Society headquartered in California, USA. There is a low percentage of Americans and British who believe some fool's allegation that the USA never went to the Moon. There are multi-millions of so called scientific minds who believe that life comes from the non-living, that birds evolved from crocodiles and that there is really a Bermuda Triangle, Big Foot, Atlantis, a Holy Graile, and conversant life in the deep dark reaches of the cosmos.
Please.
The odds of some ET being interested in us is laughable. Even if a Jody Foster-like "contact" might be made, the response time and the reply time would tens of thousands of years past the lifetimes of the original communicators great-great-great-great grandchildren because of the immense distances and built -in limitations of electromagnetic speed involved. Do not confuse evolution-induced whistful thinking and the money-grubbing entertainment industry to interfere with reality. Searching for ET is a religion of faith and hope ; it is a ridiculously bad waste of time , effort and recources.

well thing is, people never thought the world was flat.
well thats what i got told anyway
its just a common myth that they did
watch qi :) tis good for urban myths

and in answer to your question
something like knowing whether there is life outside our world is such a major question that we might never find out, but the general idea is that (we think) that there are sooo many countless universes etc that there simply MUST be some other life out there. So thats why they state that.
i guess...

People who think the Earth is flat are the same ones who swear that all the Apollo manned lunar landings were hoaxes. After all they saw a TV show that proved it was a hoax : - ) Another one of their favorite 'facts' is that 9-1-1 was a US government conspiracy. They also believe that Elvis is alive and working in a donut shop in Cleveland.

People have known the world was round longer than 500 years gueniess!!!!! But I guess they would never think of life elsewhere because they thought the universe was realy small.

The difference nowadays is that "knowledge" is based on observation rather than religious or philosophical argument.

So while most scientists might say that intelligent life may exist elsewhere, they might also say that because of the size of the universe we might never be able to prove this theory.

For those who doubt that these people really exist:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_Society
For the record, I believe such people are... mislead, to put it politely.

I think I will be reiterating what a few other people have said, but basically, my response is "Who cares, really?" Until aliens knock on my front door and invite themselves in, I do not really have to concern myself with whether or not they exist. (Alright, so I exaggerate slightly. If they made themselves known in any way, it would require some consideration on my part.)

I don't believe many people have claimed that alien life forms definitely do not exist. But many people know that no alien life forms have been shown to exist. Theres nothing wrong with thinking aliens don't exist until we see that they are. I don't believe that spaghetti monsters exist, but if one showed up I would have to believe it. On the other hand, you would have to think with the infinite size of space there would have to be some life somewhere other than earth. Either way no way is the wrong way to think.

Universe is approximately flat, and its shape is that of the Klein's bottle one.Knowledge don't change with time, but it's accuracy.

I don't think there is anyone alive who thinks the earth is flat, or any other planet or moon for that matter. What is your point?
