In Northern Britain at this time of the year, one very bright star appears before any other. For some considerable time (at least half an hour), it is the only star visible in the sky - then, as it gets darker, other dimmer stars start to appear. Can anyone tell me the name of this very bright star?

Define absolute magnitude and apparent magnitude. Why do some stars with absolute magnitudes much greater than the sun have much smaller apparent magnitudes?

I heard that sunspots cause solar flares and that is a big one hits earth it could burn out all transformers and civilization would collapse without electricity for at least 2 years it takes to replace them, ( if possible to do with no electricity) man would revert to stone age quickly, no cell phones ( the satellites go down too from the flare) not gasoline pumps no water pumps etc etc.) we all become Amish overnight.
Well not stone age, but like 1700 - 1800 maybe. Who could survive? they also said that sunpsots occur in cycles and the next big cycle is due 2011 ( every 11 years or so) The one in 2000 knocked out power in Quebec.
any thoughts?

as every universal activity follow a routine cycle, big-bang is also a routine phenemenon. before big-bang cosmic particle must have been accumulating in a single gravitational forse(as in black hole). before that a different universe might in existanse as we have now........

I read in the wikipedia that when refraction takes place wave length changes depending on the medium but the frequency remains the same. We know that the frequency and wavelength are inter-related. How can the frequency remain the same when the wavelength varaies?

I was reading an article in Scientific American about he theory of Dark Energy. In the computer models that were generated regarding the impact of dark energy on galaxy formation and structure, they show what looks like a 3-d cobweb of energy streams flowing from point to point. I guess I don’t have a question but more of an observation I am hoping you can build on. Could it be possible that black holes as we know them are not an extreme gravitational force as opposed to a plasma energy conduit that takes in regular energy and converts it to dark energy which then flows along a preformed plasma path to the next, etc. So the black holes are actually the nexus for dark energy stream intersections. Perhaps the bending of light and appearance of gravity having this effect is an optical illusion created by dark energy plasma.

I said before that I'm developping a new theory that could explains the origin of the univers, the solar system, life in Earth, behaivor aof living beings, a new explanation of the elements and their periodicity, this theory could complete the work of important physicians like prof. Leonard Suskind, prof. Felix Broch, etc.
What I'm looking for is for
