It is possible. A large enough solar flare (which we have yet to see) could theoretically cause enough electrica disturbance to wipe out a large number of electrical transformers worldwide. This would be catastrophic as it would leave the affected areas without electrical power until the transformers are replaced, and they are not easy to build. I believe the world's total capacity for transformer construction is less than 100 per year, and there are more than that in the US alone.
This catastrophe is avoided easily by shutting down power to the transformers before the flare hits Earth. Of course this means creating an intentional blackout pretty much everywhere but a short term intentional blackout is far better than an unwanted blackout that lasts months if not years.

You are REALLY over reacting. Solar flares have caused some power outages before, but nothing that can't be repaired in a few hours or days. After all, we have had electricity for a hundred years now and that is quite a few 11 year sunspot cycles, and what you describe has not happened yet, hast it?

it'd ensue, or it is going to possibly no longer. Apocalyptics have been around for hundreds of years; none of them have been actual, and that i doubt 2012 is any a lot extra possibly a date for the top of the international than those all of us else ever thought it'd be. yet relatively, no person will understand whilst the top of the international will ensue till it certainly takes place. (Sunspots on the solar are no longer, i think of, a solid indicator of the coming end; they are scientifically shown to be established phenomena.)

I don't think we will ever have a solar flare so powerful that it could knockout power more than one nation. I think they can do a lot of damage but none will ever be able to run around the whole planet and destroy all power.

They have happened about every 11 years did any of them do much damage??? The CB and fuses have done a good job and so far our outages have lasted a few hours.

NO! What you "heard" is pure bunk.
Yeah, flares can certainly affect electronics and cause power outages, but knock out our whole civilization??? Just where do you get this kind of ridiculous conjecture?
