I heard that two days ago Mars came within the orbit of the moon and then went back to its regular martian location. Perhaps you caught it checking out the Earth - just don't touch baby...

There is no way to confuse the moon for Mars.
The moon is large and a very obvious object in the night sky, while Mars is just a bright dot like any of the other stars in the sky.

It was the moon. Sometimes the moon does appear to retain a reddish hue, and looks a bit like the red planet. But mars is always far enough away so you can't mistake it for the moon.

It is impossible to mistake Mars for the Moon. The moon does appear as a disk (at least when it is full) half a degree wide.
Mars would only appear as a large star, essentially a single dot.

If it was a little bright reddish star looking point of light it was Mars. If was the size of you thumb extended out to arms length it was the Moon.
