Astronomy & Space - July 2006

I currently live in Wyoming at an altitude of 7,000+ feet above sea level. Of course, days are longer during the summer, but when I look in the Western sky at 10:00 pm, there is still ight on the horizon! I've never lived in a place that has had such long sunsets! Why do this happen? Does it have something to do with our altitude and the curvature of the earth? Maybe it's our place in the hemisphere?

Is it going to go today (monday) or did the weather delay it again? What happened with that crack they found? There was meant to be a news conference. I would just check a news website but they are notoriously bad at reporting on this kind of thing, even the BBC.

Please explain to me when you see the orbital pass of the shuttle or a satellite plotted on a world map it shows the path around the earth as a series of loops across the equater. it loops to a certain point south and then loops back to the same distance north. Is this due the earth's rotation?

Since the Columbia disaster, they've only used Discovery. To my knowledge, Endeveour and Atlantis are still in the fleet.
