Considering what they're working with it's almost like taking a number on the death trap. Don't HUMVEES impress you the same way?

It is time to replace the fleet. The current shuttle vehicles are state of the art from 20 years ago or more. With all the advances in materials technology over the last 20 years, there are surely better materials and technologies to make the replacement vehicles more dependable and not as susceptible to accidents.

They are retiring the fleet in 2010. However, they are working on a new vehicle to convey astronauts and materials to the international space station and beyond.

I do not think so, but they cold use them as a test bed for technologies to be used on the replacement. My concern with NASA right now is not the current practices in the Shuttle program, but the lack of information and progress about the replacement vehicles.

in the starting up, the area Shuttles have all been retired, so that they are not part of the tale any extra. The Hubble area Telescope is in a good orbit, so is largely in loose fall, with the forces of gravity and inertia balancing one yet another out.

I think they should man it with convicted mass murderers awaiting the death penalty. That way they could save money, as keeping them in prison costs about as much money as would launching them into space.
