The role of engineering in disaster relief
We’ve seen war and famine in Africa, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the earthquake in Kashmir … So what are the key areas where engineers contribute to the relief operations in the short and the long term? What criteria should be applied in deciding the level and type of help? Are there ethical issues to be faced? How can UK engineers get involved?

Is there a quicker and easier method to convert different amounts of units into other units?

Thanks!

In a shipment of 100 televisions, 6 are defective. If a person buys two televisions from that shipment, what is the probability that both are defective?

First off, i want to thank you for your answers, i really, obsolutely helped me understand what and how to start.

Secondly, i use the method that you just explained to me in the previous problem. But when i worked this problem, the answer is incorrect.

This is how i did it: There are 100 TV, 6 of them are defective. The probability of getting the first fective one is 6/100 and the probability of the second defective one is also 6/100. Therefore, the chance of getting both defective TV is (6/100)*(6/100)= 9/2500.

But that answer is incorrect, the right answer is 1/330. Why is that?

The image we have is of stars existing in great galaxies, but there being vast tracts of empty space between the galaxies.
But I wonder whether any stars have ever broken free of their galaxies and are wondering freely through space billions of light years away.

Equally could a planet have broken free of a star, and float throught space frozen solid light years from the nearest star.

This is really puzzling me. So I thought that after the summer solstice the sunrise and sunset move toward each other and make the day shorter. And then after the winter solstice they move away from each other (sunrise earlier, sunset later) to make the day longer. This makes sense with the tilt of the earth and all.

Looking at the actual times, it seems that there are 2 weeks after the winter solstice at the end of December where:

1. The sunrise continues to get later
2. The sunset also gets later (and faster, lengthening the day
