The image we have is of stars existing in great galaxies, but there being vast tracts of empty space between the galaxies.
But I wonder whether any stars have ever broken free of their galaxies and are wondering freely through space billions of light years away.
Equally could a planet have broken free of a star, and float throught space frozen solid light years from the nearest star.
