I was at Monticello Dam on Lake Berryessa in California and noticed the layers of rock were turned sideways. I thought the layers went down based on how old the rock was. What would make them go sideways like that?

Ok so the equation goes:

y = 2cosx - cos2x

dy/dx=?

In the answer key in my book they got the derivative:

dy/dx = 2sinxcosx - cosx. How exactly did they get this? From what I am doing I am not getting their answer!

Where x is not necessarily just x. For example. The integral of e^(-50000x). Everything I can think of wants to tell me that the integral of e^(anything) is the same e^(anything). I can't remember what exactly was the rule for integrating e^x when x is something other than x.
