you can perform just about any procedure now
and the monitoring of it makes it safer

From 1846 until the 1960 (ether) was used as anesthesia. In the late '50s to the '60s nitrous oxide or laughing gas was used it was discovered in 1772. In the late '60s to present time different types of anesthesia has been developed for intravenous use. Sodium pentothal was one of the first.
