Okay I'm sure I know the stuff for the Geometry test tommorow but my teacher is so LAME (really) she wont allow us to use calculators! So I need to know whats the easy way to figure out these pretty basic problems

-7 + 8 =
-7 - 9 =

You know the whole negative times a negative
positive plus a positive (well thats easy at least.)
negative times postive

Can you tell me the rules like a neg and a neg will always equal pos right? Give an example or 2 it would be really helpful

Ahmad and Bob want to calculate the height of a tree. They measure the angles of elevation to the top of the tree. The angle of elevation from Bob, who is standing 60 m from the base of the tree, to the top of the tree, is 40˚. The angle of elevation from Ahmad, who is standing 80 m from Bob, is 50˚. The height of the tree is 50 m.

Calculate the angle between Ahmad and Bob.

I was asked this the other day in a rather drunken state and i cant figure out the answer! Scientists which believe in the big bang theory state that the universe is expanding. However the universe is described as "the totality of known or supposed objects and phenomena throughout space; the cosmos; macrocosm." So what is everything expanding in to?

Find the minimum distance from the point (3,2) to the curve y = x² + 2.

I know how to find the distance from a point to a line. The distance from the point to the curve should be the same as the distance from the point to the tangent of the curve at the nearest point on the curve. But since I don’t know either the nearest point on the curve or the slope of the curve at that point, I am not sure how to proceed.

....traveling 65 mph How long will it take before they are 180 miles apart??

and then the teacher included a hint, yet it made me even more confused..the only thing i think i get is that you have make an equation and solve it ? yet how do i even start one ???

Hint: The time for both cars is the same and can be represented by "t." The total distance is 180 miles. The distance = (rate)(time). If you add the (rate)(time) of the first vehicle to the (rate)(time) of the second vehicle, that will equal the total distance of 180 miles. Since you only have one unknown (t), you only need one equation.

I have a measurement device that I want to calibrate. From observation, it appears that a quadratic cal equation will be needed, i.e., y = ax^2 + bx + c where y is the value to be displayed, x is the raw value produced by the device, and a, b, & c are the calibration coefficients. The plan is to simultaneously take 'n' different measurements from the device (i.e., a list of 'x' values) and from a calibration standard (i.e., a list of 'y' values) that are approximately uniformly distributed over the device measurement range and then to use least-squares regression to compute a, b, & c. The minimum value of 'n' is clearly 3. Intuitively, increasing 'n' will reduce the error of the calibration process, however I'm hoping to get some quantitative guidance in choosing 'n'.
