depends what your working on-

fall protection harness for working at heights

safety glasses for inspection acid piping/ pumps or machining operations

lead suit when handling radioactive isotopes for weld x-ray inspection

MAny times, safety equipment is not required but I would always choose to have sturdy leather shoes/ boots. And also I keep quick access to hard hat/ safety glasses/ and ear plugs.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) varies widely according to the work going on, it's location and the requirements specified by regulation and your employer. In most industries a minimum just to be on the work site are hard hat, safety glasses and steel toed boots/shoes (some places also require leather work gloves). If you are told when starting a new job that you must provide your own basic PPE, that list is what they mean. More specialized equipment is normally supplied by the employer or made available for purchase at reasonable prices that can be payroll deducted. Things like fall protection harnesses, cartridge respirators, chemical protective suits should be provided.
