....traveling 65 mph How long will it take before they are 180 miles apart??

and then the teacher included a hint, yet it made me even more confused..the only thing i think i get is that you have make an equation and solve it ? yet how do i even start one ???

Hint: The time for both cars is the same and can be represented by "t." The total distance is 180 miles. The distance = (rate)(time). If you add the (rate)(time) of the first vehicle to the (rate)(time) of the second vehicle, that will equal the total distance of 180 miles. Since you only have one unknown (t), you only need one equation.

You have one going 55 mph and the other going 65 mph. So they are traveling apart at the equivalent of 120 mph (55+65). It will take them 90 minutes (1.5 hrs) to be 180 miles apart.

Another way to see it:
55t + 65t = 180
(55 + 65)t = 180
120t = 180
t = 180/120
t = 3/2
t = 1.5 hours

55+65 =120, so 120t=180 tis the time in hours
solve for t
180/120=3/2 or 1.5 so one and a half hours

the equation would be 180 = 65t + 55t ----> 180 = 120t with t expressed in hours....after dividing both sides by 120 u get 1.5 hours....

So, (rate#1)t + (rate#2)t = 180
Or, 55t + 65t = 180
120t = 180
t = 1.5 hours
