THE asteroid belt sits between mars and Jupiter. It irbits the sun in a circle just like the planets do. It is made up of millions of rocks left over from the formation of the solar system, which range in size from a small rocks, to large rocky asteroids comparable in size to earths moon.

Edit:
FYI, The Kuiper belt sits out past neptune. See links below:

The nearest asteroid belt is the one between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It orbits the Sun in the same direction as the planets do.

There is another asteroid belt beyond Neptune known as the Kuiper Belt. (pronounced KY-per - rhymes with wiper) It begins at about the orbit of the planet Neptune, but that is MUCH further away.

i don;t know how it orbits the sun, but the closest asteroid belt is the Kuiper Belt, which divides the Inner Planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars from the Gas Giants, which are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. (Pluto was recently removed from the category of Planets and made a Dwarf Planet.)
