Baleen once cleaned and processed into smooth plates look a little like plastic and has been used in corsets and as combs, brushes, pens, and ornamental/decorative items. Baleen is still used today in some countries where baleen whales are still hunted.
But to answer your questions if baleen is gross. I believe it is not gross but would prefer if the baleen was in the mouth of a live free living whale in the ocean.

When you see it up close, it looks sortof like a very old, dirty broom that has been used to clean up a lot of pee.
