I was asked this the other day in a rather drunken state and i cant figure out the answer! Scientists which believe in the big bang theory state that the universe is expanding. However the universe is described as "the totality of known or supposed objects and phenomena throughout space; the cosmos; macrocosm." So what is everything expanding in to?

we are expanding into nothingness @ 40,000 miles per hour, Imagine throwing a stone into water, you get the ripple effects outwards, well imagine there being alot less gravity etc, throw a stone into the sea and those ripples will travel until they reach another beach and just stop. But no beach they will travel until they slow right down and stop as we will do. Space hasn't been made/created yet and we are still expanding into it if you catch my drift... Until we are fully stretched then we will start to pull back in... Scientists have proved that the universe is slowing down and eventually will stop, shrinking back to the big bang is inevitable im afraid, then start all over again :)
Or, it could be a womb! or the universe could actually be a single atom cell in someones fingernail... and that persons universe is in another persons fingernail, it is endless, size really cant be an equation. It really screws my head up, you they say that sound get sconfused when we travel past it and just bangs, thats like my brain when i try to work out what the ultimate answer is... some people say its impossible, but, were here it cant be... if god really made us, who made god? where does the universe stop like a big room and our universe is a pin head the walls of the room would be the end of the universe but whats on the otherside of that wall? life/reality really is impossible... now im really confused great question

Everything is expanding into the great unknown. Hey, what possible difference does it make. The known distances involved are so gigantic as to be mind boggling and unreachable in anyone's lifetime. Some known stars are 1200 light years from Earth...hey that is so cotton picking far from here that if they park some place where they shouldn't right this minute, who is going to know? No body will find our for 1200 years.
If you wish to see it explained very graphicly and in an easily understood manner, pick up a copy of Ian Ridpath's book,
ASTRONOMY, DK Publishing, NY, NY., at your local Library or book store. When you get to the "Black Hole" theory and pictures, hey, I read the words, but I don't get that at all...planets and Stars and Asteroids all funneling down a tiny little pipe into a Singularity denser than anything ever imagined and devouring itself...that gives me a headache.

That's a good question, if the universe is ever lasting, where does it expand to, evrything has a biginning and an end. Maybe the universe is a ring and the start goes into the end. Who knows! It is like trying to imagine what 'nothing' is , you will always think black, but that is a colour. Who went to the end to see that it was expanding anyway? Oh this will get me thinking for hours now, dammit!

after the big bang, matter began to project into space, the universe is expanding because that matter is still in motion from the big bang. everything in the universe is the totality of known objects and phenomena throughout space-the unknown factor so far is how far out space goes.

Nothing.
Okay, listen to yourself.
"state that the universe is expanding"
Then why do I here them say...
"There is no end to the universe"
How's is it expanding when there's no end? It's like counting. It goes on forever. How can it expand??

the universe its expanding each day and the more gas and gravity the more galaxyes.. but its not going to keep going forever ...at some point its is going to stop! and go back and it will end up as it was before...

The space is expanding in itself; in Einstein's terms "like a dry soap being wet ".
It is common to want to find a reference point for expansion, however in this case there isn't.

Lycra spandex usually keeps things from expanding, buy can cause excess gas's if things get to tight.

A cosmic interface precedes it into nothing.
The speed of light confines the expansion.
