We had an experiment where we soaked blocks of wood in water and kerosene in separate beakers. After 20 minutes, the dimensions of the wood (length, width and height) remained the same, but it gained weight (as for each set-up). Can you please help me explain this phenomenon using the concept of imbibition; including the whole thing about cohesion and adhesion of water molecules? Please and thanks a lot!

So what do you personally think of aliens? Rather then laugh and post old jokes, just share what you think. Would they come from other planets? Or maybe some where else? Have you had an abduction experience? If so please share. Obviously something is going on. Many people having the same abduction experiences, and so many u.f.o sightings. Do you think the two are related? ~why?~

OK - I've never been much of a chemist - only continued with physics and bio at school, and now am heading geology-way at uni, and with the excitement of geochemistry, I'm starting to become a little more interested in these things called elements!!

So, I'm figuring Helium makes balloons float cause it's got such a low atomic mass, right? So is lighter than air? But Hydrogen is the lightest element isn't it, and pretty abundant - so what are the advantages of using Helium rather than Hydrogen?
