ok i have this math problem that my friend and myself are disagreeing on, we both think the others wrong..can someone help us break this up and see whos really right?

Determine the maximum and minimum values of the following set of numbers.

3, -36/7, -1, -2/3, 5/4, -5, 26/9 is the problem.

Mine is
3, -5 and 1/4, -1, -2/3, 1 and 1/4, -5, 2 and 8/9???

Shes got

3, 26/9, 5/4, -2/3, -1, -5, -36/7

which is right?

-36/7 = -5.1428...

-2/3 = -.666667

26/9 = 2.88889

So in order, from the maximum (largest) to the minimum (smallest) is:

3, 26/9, 5/4, -2/3, -1, -5, -36/7

Sorry, she's right - if nothing else, the smallest postive number is always greater than any negative number.

Your friend is right. Here's a way to look at it.

First put fractions into decimal form.

-36/7 = -5.1429
-2/3 = -0.6667
5/4 = 1.25
26/9 = 2.8889

3, -5.1429, -1, -0.6667, 1.25, -5, 2.8889

You should know a number line goes from positive infinity to negative infinity. It is divided into two symmetric halves by the origin, (the number zero).

Make a number line starting with a six and go down.
BIGGEST----> to----> SMALLEST
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6...........

now you can see where your numbers go.

you have no 6, 5, 4,
you have a 3
you have something a little bigger than 2
you have something a little bigger than 1
you have no 0
you have something a little smaller than 0
you have a -1
you have no -2 -3 -4
you have a -5
you have something a little smaller than -5

Now put them in order:


3, 2.8889, 1.25, -0.6667, -1, -5, -5.1429............

Now you can put them back into fraction form

3, 26/9, 5/4, -2/3, -1, -5, -36/7

The answer will be

The maximum value is 3 and the minimum value is -36/7.

-36/7 = -5.1428...

-2/3 = -.666667

26/9 = 2.88889

Yours are very random while hers are ordered from maximum to minimum which is the reverse order when one considers the convention for ordering numbers is from smallest to largest. (and I think you mean - 5 and 1/7 not -5 and 1/4)
