I know that sound is caused by a collision which creates vibrations and the surrounding gasses creates frequencys and then they travel through the air and touch the hairs in your ear and the membranes move back and forth and it is transformed into what we perceived as sound. What i want to know is when a collison occurs in a vaccum, why the energy that would normally be pushing on the gasses wont pass through the "nothingness" directly to the ear hairs and membranes. Energy can not be created or destroyed so where does the energy go that is created when a colision occurs in a vaccum. and if it reaches your ear why doesnt it push the hairs and create sound. If it can push air molecules then it has enough force to push your ear hairs.

During a road trip, Tony drove one-third the distance that Lana drove. Mark drives 24 more miles than Lana drove. The total distance they drove was 346 miles. How many miles did each person drive?
This is what I have so far but I get stuck=
x+1/3x+24+x=346; then
2 1/3x+24=346; then
7/3x+24=346

When I try to get x I doesn't plug in and equal 346. Can you please help??

Thanks-Melany

I'm concerned as most other people when it comes to global warming. So it is believed that carbon dioxide has a major affect on the earths warming but what about other factors that maybe even bigger than CO2. Ever layed in a field with green grass under a shady tree on a hot summers day and felt cool? But when on the city street surrounded by tarmac and sitting under a man made bus shelter on a hot summers day it is stinking hot still?
Well its the natural evaporation from the grass and trees that cools the air around the tree. Across the world urban sprawl is huge removing the trees and grass (earths natuarl air conditioning system) laying tarmac, tiled and tin rooves all which retain heat.
So should we be looking at better reflective surfaces for our buildings?
Ones which reflect radiation rather than absorb it?
painting roads white and having white rooves on all the buildings and houses around the world might have a greater effect than reducing CO2.

I measured 94dB from an industrial sound source (4 ft away) in a very large room (guessing 200 x 400 ft with 20 ft ceilings). I am taking that same device and placing it in a 20 ft x 22 ft room with 10 ft ceilings. Most of that sound will come back as early reflections and that will increase the perceived sound by occupants of the room by some amount. I've looked into the physics books, and I seem to grasp the concept of the intensity varying 1/R^2. But I'm not sure exactly how to calculate the increase due to the volume of the room reduction. Not looking for a science project, just a quick & dirty guestimate! Please help!

Block 1, of mass "m1", moves across a frictionless surface with speed "vi". It collides elastically with block 2, of mass "m2", which is at rest (vi=0). After the collision, block 1 moves with speed "vf", while block 2 moves with speed "vf". Assume that m1 > m2, so that after the collision, the two objects move off in the direction of the first object before the collision.

1. This collision is elastic. What quantities, if any, are conserved in this collision?
-kinetic energy only
-momentum only
-kinetic energy and momentum

2. What is the final speed vf of block 1?
Express vf in terms of m1, m2, and vi.

3. What is the final speed vf of block 2?
Express vf in terms of m1, m2, and vi.

I have to get two wisdom teeth removed. They became infected during my pregnancy, and I've waited this long to have them removed so that I can get anesthesia during the procedure. I've been nursing two months, so I can pump and bottlefeed, but will I be able to breastfeed post-op while taking prescribed pain meds (I'm talking about vicodin or percocet, not tylenol). Thanks
