how hard is it to learn the basics of mechanics? for example, if my car broke down, i would want to be able to identify the problem. When I look at an engine, i see metal and wires. Could Mechanics for Dummies (the book) teach me what i would need to know?

ya that should be enough to get by on. Car hardware changes so fast and it so much linked to electronics that most of the time u cant do anything without running tests with a computer.
