During a road trip, Tony drove one-third the distance that Lana drove. Mark drives 24 more miles than Lana drove. The total distance they drove was 346 miles. How many miles did each person drive?
This is what I have so far but I get stuck=
x+1/3x+24+x=346; then
2 1/3x+24=346; then
7/3x+24=346
When I try to get x I doesn't plug in and equal 346. Can you please help??

subtract 24 from both sides
7/3x=322
multiply by 3
7x=966
divide by 7
x=138

Well 346-24=322
Well how I did it was break it down into thirds. 1/3+3/3+3/3, There are 7 thirds. If you find a third you can find 3/3rds.
322/7=46
46x3=138
138+24=162
So Tony=46, Lana=138, Mark=162

Easy. then subtract both sides by 24. that will give you 7/3x=322 next get rid of the fraction by multiplying both sides by 3. That gives you 7x=966 then divde both sides by 7. this gives you x=138. plug it into the equation like this: 138+1/3(138)+24+138=346. Then simply solve. good luck!!!

mark drove 3x+24
x+3x+3x+24=346
7x=322
x=46
Tony drove 46 miles
Lana drove 3*46=138 miles
Mark drove 138+24=162 miles
check
46+138+162=346

You are correct so far.
Now subtract 24 from both sides to give :
(7/3)x = 322
Then multiply both sides by 3/7 to give :
x = 322 * 3 / 7
