A block of mass 8.00 kg is pushed up against a wall by a force P that makes a 50.0° angle with the horizontal. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the wall is 0.267. What are the possible values for the magnitude of P that allow the block to remain stationary.

I have the answer but I just need to know the process:
You have a square parallel-plate capacitor of length 2L and seperation L/2. You have a dielectric slab of length L, width L, and thickness L/4. You can change the shape of the dielectric slab. However, the length must remain equal to the width, and the total volume must remain constant; you may only change the thickness. Show that if the thickness is h, then the capacitance is given by: C=[epsilon knot]L^2{4h^2/[L(k-1)+h] + L/2 - h }^-1. k is the dielectric constant kappa.

Rutherford expected the alpha particles to go right through the gold foil...I thought that the model of the atom at the time was a solid sphere so wouldn't he have expected them to bounce off? Did he shoot beta particles before alpha particles and they went through? I know his conclusion was that atoms are mostly empty space with a dense central positive core.
