Interstate 78 in New Jersey took well over 10 years to complete. The eastern section from the NJ Turnpike stopped in Springfield, while the western section from the PA state line stopped in Berkeley Heights. The section in between was held up for years by environmental protesters who feared the loss of habitat for animals living in the nearby Watchung Reservation. A compromise was finally reached that included building several additional overpasses complete with trees and shrubs. The overpasses allowed native animals to cross the road without danger of being hit by cars.
